Welcome To Chemistry Department

The Department of Chemistry is one of the prestigious departments of D. A. V. College, Abohar. The department came into existence as centre of Science in 1960 with the sincere efforts Sh. N.D. Grover (Founder Principal of the College). After obtaining financial aid from UGC, it was upgrade upto the level of full-fledged department. The department is swollen with proud to be the first in the then Ferozepur district to start M. Sc. Course in Chemistry with efforts of Principal Dr. B. C. Josan and H. O. D. Dr. B. B. Sharma in 2005. Department is the only with in this region obtaining recognition of Research Centre approved by Panjab University, Chandigarh for obtaining Ph. D. degree. It has on its faculty, highly competent and efficient members, whose work and skill are recognized. Most of the faculty reputed as principals in different colleges:

  1. Sh. N. d. Grover (Founder Principal of D. A. V. College, Abohar).
  2. Prof. R. K. Chauhan (D. A. V. School, Cheeka).
  3. Prof. H. R. Gandhar (D. A. V. School, Cheeka &D. A. V. College, Abohar),
  4. Prof. S. K. Kohli (D. A. V. College, Malout),
  5. Dr. B. B. Sharma (D. A. V. College, Abohar & D. A. V. College, Jalandhar),
  6. Sh. S. P. S. Kataria
  7. Prof. R. K. Sethi

The Department under the competent headship of Prof. Gandhar was adorned with the 1st Chemistry Lab. Prof. R.K. Chauhan served to make the subject a popular one and Prof. S. K. Kohli through his dedication and discipline achieved desired results. Dr. B.B Sharma and Mrs. Saroj Madaan were able enough to make a mark that every Engineer and Doctor of the area feels proud to be the student of him.

Presently the Department is functioning under the headship of Dr. Suresh Kumar Sharma (M.Sc. Ph. D.) who joined the Department on 03.07.2006. Dr. Suresh Kumar Sharma has completed 3 research projectsfunded by CSIR and UGC and published 36 research papers in various journals of national and international repute.

The department has stimulating undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes. Frequent Seminars, quizzes have been organized for the benefits of talented students. Seminars have created a deep and extensive impact on quality of chemistry education in the region and act as nodal agency to popularize chemistry in daily life.

The discipline of chemistry today occupies a pivotal position in teaching and research of all basic sciences. The fields of agriculture, pharmaceutical and environmental sciences are incomplete without a sound knowledge of chemistry. Recent advances in biotechnology and its industrial applications have been possible only due to thorough understanding of the underlying principles of chemistry.

The department of chemistry produces students with sound background of theoretical and experimental knowledge. The students completing their B. Sc. and M. Sc. easily find placements at government and private sector enterprises. In view of the advances made by chemistry department in teaching it has also a very good scope of self-employment.A large number of students who passed out from this Department got government jobs as TGT, PGT.

Besides academics, the department organized educational excursions andvisited a number of places.

Various Activities by the Department

  1. National Conference on “Recent Advancement and Developments in Chemical Sciences” (January 7-8, 2008) funded by DRDO, CSIR and local community.
  2. National Conference on “Recent Advancement and Developments in Chemical Sciences” (February 9, 2015) funded by Dean College Development Council, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
  3. One day National Conference on “Recent Trends in Chemical, Environmental and Material Sciences” (24th January, 2018) funded by Dean College Development Council, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
  4. One day National Seminar on “Solar and Sustainable Energy Applications of Material Science and Physico-Chemical Innovations” on 19/3/2019 funded by University Grants Commission, New Delhi under NSQF Scheme of UGC.
