The Department of English is one of the prestigious departments of D. A. V. College, Abohar. The department came into existence in 1960 with the sincere efforts of Sh. N.D. Grover (Founder Principal of the College). The department of English is one of the important and largest departments of the college both in terms of efficient faculty and the variety of courses it offers. Department of English has been playing a significant role in educating and empowering the students for more than half a century. The Department of English also has a literary society that aims at developing critical thinking among the students of literature. Literature being a cultural product of society or the mirror of society also helps to become good human being. The department focuses on providing an overview of literature from aesthetic, linguistic, socio-political and cultural context. It has latest teaching aids and equipments such as Language Lab, Interactive Smart Board, and Internet Faculty along with Over Head Projectors etc. to facilitate learning as well as teaching. The department has the credit of organizing National Seminars, Extension Lectures, Quizzes, Declamation and other needful activities for the overall development of the students.

Presently the Department is functioning under the headship of Mr. Varinder Kumar (M.A, M. Phil, NET-JRF, B.Ed., PGCTE). The department has stimulating undergraduate teaching programmes. Frequent Seminars, Quizzes, Poem Writing, Essay Writing, Workshop, Declamation and other activities have been organized for the benefits of talented students.

Events and Activities

  1. National Seminar on “Literature, History and Culture” was organized by Department of English DAV College Abohar on 25th 2012funded by University Grants Commission, New Delhi.
  2. Documentary Movie on Malgudi Days and Climate Change was screened by Department of English DAV College Aboharon 19th 2015.
  3. An Extension Lecturewas organized by Department of English, DAV College, Abohar on 23rd 2015. Lecture delivered by Dr. Umed Singh, Chairperson of Department of English, CDLU Sirsa. Topic of Extension Lecture was Racial Discrimination.
  4. Creative writing (Poem Writing) competition was organized by Department of English DAV College Abohar on 22nd January 2016.
  5. Competition of English Language Skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) was organized by Department of English DAV College Abohar on 3rd November, 2017
  6. An Extension Lecturewas organized by Department of English, DAV College, Abohar on 16th November 2018. Lecture delivered by Neeta Kumari, Assistant Professor, Guru Nanak Khalsa Girls College, Muktsar. Topic of Extension Lecture was Approaching Literature through Textbooks.
  7. A Workshop was conducted for the students of B.AI, II, III by Department of English, DAV College, Abohar on 25th January 2019. Topic of workshop was Translation Techniques.
  8. An Extension Lecture for the students of B.A I, II, III, and for B.B.A I was organized by Department of English, DAV College, Abohar on 13thMarch 2020. Lecture Delivered by ParneetJaggi, Associate Professor at Dr. BhimRaoAmbedkar Govt. College, Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. Topic of Extension Lecture was Enhancing Communicative and Creative Skills.
  9. An online Symposium was organized by Department of English, DAV College, Abohar on August 22, 2020.
